  1. The registration under the ESI scheme is mandatory for the factories wherein the number of employees is 10 or more. The mandatory strength of employees for an establishment to register under the ESI scheme varies from 10 to 20 in various states.
  2. As per the ESI scheme, the employer is required to contribute 4.75% of the gross monthly salary of the employer and 1.75% of the gross monthly salary of the employee every month.
  3. The base salary to get these insurance benefits is Rs. 21000 per month excluding overtime remuneration with effect from 1st January 2019. Before that the base salary was Rs.15000. 
  4. This scheme covers multiple benefits such as medical benefit, sickness benefit, maternity benefit, disablement benefit, dependent’s benefit, funeral expenses, other benefits (Section 46 of the ESI Act, 1948).

 

How to apply?

Registration Procedure:

The steps involved in the registration of the entity under the ESI scheme are as follows:

  1. Step 1(Sign up): The employer is required to sign up by providing basic information at the www.esic.in. An email is sent to the user with login credentials after successful signup.
  2. Step 2 (Registration of Main Unit): the user is required to log in on the same website with the credentials. The employer is required to enter information and details such as PAN details, details of premises, employee details, etc. 
  3. Step 3 (Payment): If the employer is a manpower supplier, security agency or contractor and Government contractor, after the generation of Code Number, the registering employers are required to pay the advance contribution for six months, which is worked out as follows: 
  4. The number of employees (who get Rs.21000 per month) x minimum wagesx6x6.5%
  5. Step 4 (Registration Letter): The employer will get the System generated registration letter on the registered email id once the payment challan gets realized from the bank. This Letter can be used as a valid proof of registration under the ESI Act and it doesn’t require any signature on it.
  6. Annual Return:The annual return is required to be filed twice a year post ESI registration.
