How to apply?

  1. Step 1(Online Registration of Establishment): This can be done from the official website of Employees’ Provident Fund Organization, by filling all the required details. While initiating the registration user manual is available to guide through the registration process.
  2. Step 2 (Register Digital Signature Certificate): The user gets the Universal Account Number and Password which is to be used in the Register Establishment Homepage of the EPFO website to register the digital signature. The DSC registration process is also eased by the instruction manual available on the website. 
  3. Step 3 (Apply for the Code): Users need to apply for the code on the EPFO website after registering the DSC from the tab adjacent to the DSC registration tab. The procedure involves filling the fresh application form. The user must put his PAN and Digital Signature Certificate. Once the application for the code is filled it cannot be changed or edited thus, the employer needs to extra careful while filling the form.
  1. PAN must be in the name of the establishment or the proprietor of the establishment.
  2. The name entered must be in the same format as furnished to the Income Tax Department. The data online is verified and even the slightest change can result in rejection of the application.

After uploading all the documents and necessary details the form can be submitted.

  1. Step 4 (Electronic Challan cum Return login): The employer can log in to the ECR portal with the id password provided via SMS and create his permanent id and password for starting remittance through ECR upload. 

The documents required for registration under the EPF scheme by various establishments along with proof of the number of employees are:

  1. Applicant’s name (Certificate of Incorporation/registration)
  2. PAN Card
  3. MOA & Bylaws, Partnership Deed, AOA
  4. ID proof of members, partners, directors

The establishment's employing less than 20 employees can also register themselves under the scheme voluntarily under (section 1(4)). Central Government is vested with the power to apply the provisions of EPF in any establishment employing less than 20 employees after giving them 2 months’ notice of compulsory registration (section 1(3)(b)). The Registered establishment continues to be within the purview of the EPF and MP Act, 1952 even if the minimum strength is reduced.
